Store is Open....Raw milk back on the menu!!!!

Dear Friends,

Hope this email finds you all doing well.

Our big announcement for this week is that RAW MILK is now available again through our online store and farm truck!!! We have partnered with Country Gardens to make their delicious milk available to our customers. Joe Cunningham and his family milk a herd of Jersey girls on pasture based and grass fed diet and they also supplement a non-soy, non-gmo feed as we did. If you are excited to have this milk come back to our delivery areas please show your support by signing up to buy some today!! Because of the logistics we need to give Joe and his family a decent weekly order to keep them coming back so lets show them some love for the raw milk!!
p.s..word also has it we may be in line for some raw cream and butter shortly.

We had another productive and exciting week here this week and are looking forward to more continued progress in the beds and produce areas. Friday we welcomed our new produce and garden manager, Krista Slavik. She comes to us with and extensive background in herbals, medicinals, wild forage and sustainability skills and we feel she is going to be a huge asset to the farm and our produce operations. We are getting her acclimated to the farm and our community and will share more about her soon. She will be joining us in the market booths and on the farm truck as well so swing by and say hello if you get a chance.

Last week we mentioned to you about the continuing advancement of the GMO and big Ag agenda with the new addition of 3 new GMO potato strains. I heard a few folks say that its not that big a deal but I disagree wholeheartedly. A couple of the main problems with the GMO strains is a)your body does not recognize them because they are not from the natural created order. Often times this leads to problems for your perfectly balanced bodies in figuring out what to do with them so they can lead to CHRONIC illness over the long haul and b)they are manufactured, trademarked and patented which means they are most often controlled by corporate entities strictly for profit. We are already seeing this disastrous food model in play with the corn, wheat and other commodity products in our country. Left unabated and unchecked corporations could one day control all the seeds and seed strains and then they would get to decide what can be farmed and what can’t….It’s bad enough now with all the lies and untruths in the labeling and marketing they do…we need to remain diligent in fighting against the proliferation of the GMO food chain. Its disastrous at best!! Read more about it here….
GMO Potatoes

Our CSA sales will remain open a few more weeks until we fill the rest of the slots. We will HAVE to close them for the Spring/Summer 2017 season shortly though so if you’re interested please order soon.

That’s all for this week…Make sure and check out the facebook page Here to see current photos and tidbits and don’t forget to check out the menu below for this weeks ordering!!! We love ya and we need ya!!

Have a delicious week!!

Sincerely,
Greg, Lainya and the Hutchins Family

Weblog Entry

Dear Friends,

Hope this email finds you all doing well.

It’s been a very nice and productive week here at the farm. We have continued our planting and preparation for the spring season. This week we planted arugula, 3 kinds of kale, tatsoi, beets, radishes, leeks, parsnips and carrots. We also were able to harvest, from our over wintered crops, salad mix, braising mix, carrots, beets, collards, kale and broccoli.

We spent a large portion of yesterday plowing more beds and moving the laying hens to a new grazing and roaming area so they can continue to thrive. We have a whole new batch of 250 laying hens and we gathered our first of the season eggs yesterday!!! Hopefully this new batch of girls will give us an ample bounty throughout 2017!!

The CSA sales will remain open a few more weeks until we fill the rest of the slots. There have been quite a few people express disappointment that we closed them out before the tax refunds came in for a lot of folks so we, as is our custom, are responding to your request! We are honored that you would spend your money with us for good food done right so please order away!!! We will HAVE to close them for the Spring/Summer 2017 season shortly though so if you’re interested please order soon.

I did not have time to do a whole lot of research for newsworthy items for this weeks newletter but there are a few things I want to mention that I’m looking at for next week:

  • Whole Foods was in the news again about imported and processed produce from China that has not been certified or inspected but is labeled as such…I’m gonna dig into this a little more
  • The Idaho potato industry announced that the FDA (Federal Deception Agency) has approved 3 new genetically modified potato seeds for their MASSIVE industry. Look for ALL your commercial potatoes to go the way of corn in the next few years!!!
  • An independent test of Subway’s chicken filet and strips revealed that the DNA of the chicken samples was only 53% chicken!!! The rest was GMO’s, soy, fillers and chemicals!!!What a rip off. These are the same kind of games and results a lot if the commercial and industrial food system will offer. One more VERY good reason to shop local and support your small farmer. If we go away crooks like this are all that will be left.

With all the despair of fillers, modifiers and junk in our food and health system I do want to point out one shining star of purity in our home. Lainya (she’d be the farmers wife) has started to represent Young Living as an independent representative. We have been using a lot of their products in our household for a while now and the results have been so good that she has started to work directly with them as a representative and team builder. We are now offering a selection of their products on the online store with, I am told, more to come. You owe it to yourself to give these wonderful products a try and if you are interested in more of the oils and opportunities of Young Living email Lainya directly @ Lainya Hutchins

That’s all for this week…Make sure and check out the facebook page Here to see current photos and tidbits and don’t forget to check out the menu below for this weeks ordering!!! We love ya and we need ya!!

Have a delicious week!!

This Week From The Farm....Store is open

Dear Friends,

Hope this email finds you all doing well.

We have had a whirlwind week here at the farm with all the seeding, rowing, transplants and what not getting ready to go into the ground for spring harvest!! Spent the afternoon yesterday plowing, harrowing and laying out spring beds. The weather has sure been nice and keeps hinting at an early spring but we have been here before and are doing our best to keep ourselves in check and from, as my dad used to say, “chomping at the bit to get started”!! We know all too well that old man winter may not be done with us yet!

That said though we do have some really nice items already started in the protected nook of our propagation house and are looking to direct seed some early crops next week. Our hope and prayer is that the groundhog was wrong this year and spring is indeed in the air!

We also wanted to let you know that, by popular demand, we have re-opened our CSA sales for a few more weeks headed into spring.

We were also asked to provide some specific and concrete examples of the problem for consumers with organic factory farmed items. So here is a clear example… Simple Truth Organic Chicken . They have an organic product line that many consumers buy thinking they are chickens raised on a quaint family farm because they are organic when the truth is they are industrially raised in an inhumane, nasty and overcrowded chicken house. The only thing that keeps them organic is that they get organic feed and some USDA bureaucrat is stamping their paperwork once a year to say they are compliant with the program. Even though 99%of the birds NEVER see a speck of sunshine or outdoor time at all!! To me (and I admit I am simple minded person) that should not be allowed to be labeled as organic….period! If you think the certification by USDA should protect you then take a look at these 2 links…One is the code of regulations for synthetic usage (as in non-organic) in food and the other is the list of EPA inert ingredients allowed under the aforementioned CFR code. Some of the EPA items are obviously harmless but good Lord!!!…try to figure out what they are allowed to do and not allowed to do and you will see what its NO WONDER most Americans have NO clue whats really in their food!!!

Code of Federal Regulations

EPA approved inert ingredients

This Week From The Farm....Store is open

Dear Friends,

Thank you all for your outpouring of support, advice, orders and encouraging words from last weeks e-mail. One of the resounding messages was that you wanted to hear from us more about whats happening on the farm and that we should be more diligent on our marketing, outreach and food related news. We will endeavor to answer that call! It may not be every week but we will begin to use this newsletter as a way to keep you more informed.

This week we started propagating all of our spring transplants and will begin direct sowing seeds next week for the early spring garden. We also moved our ducklings out from the brooder area to the pasture so you should be seeing duck back on the menu in about 6 weeks! Make sure and check out the facebook page Here to see current photos and tidbits……more to come soon.

Have a delicious week!!

Correction....store still open

Sorry y’all. The online store is open till 8 pm on Thursday night for Saturday delivery.

Sorry for the confusion.

GH

A message from your farmer....Please Read

Dear Friends,

Hope this letter finds you all healthy, happy and prosperous. As is our custom we are sending out this email to alert you to the start of our weekly online offering for next weeks delivery but we also have an important message we need to share with you.

I was recently asked by a longtime customer, and I quote, “why do your emails sometimes seem to have an almost televangelist like plea for business/support?” To say that I was taken aback would be accurate but the more I thought about it the more I thought it warranted an explanation.(even though I don’t agree with the statement).

So here goes….when Lainya and I started the farm as a business a few years ago we could barely produce enough to satisfy the customers we had let alone enough to support our family. What we did have was a commitment to clean, humane, local and organically farmed food. We kept pecking away at it and eventually our effort (and that of many other small farms) were recognized for what we were doing and the sales grew. We were making a pretty good living at it and started expanding our investment in the farm with the hopes of a secure and stable farming future. After a few years farmers like us grew to such large numbers that we actually started drawing the attention of the big box players, the big ag folks and the people with a lot of money to throw at marketing and fancy labels. What has happened over the last couple of years is that the big box guys, with the support of the USDA, as well as the people with lots of money to throw at marketing, have begun to eat away at the trend of farmer to consumer sales with bogus products, marketing, usda subsidized pricing and labeling. The result has been a decided downswing in sales for smaller farms like us. Add to that the upswing of pre-boxed, door to door, ready to eat, so called farm to table meals and you may begin to get a picture of where we are. We NEED your business!

Consider this…..

In the last few months we have seen several similar farms of our size close down. We’ve seen several true farm to table businesses fold and we’ve watched with an insiders view how some of these other, larger, dishonest enterprises are prospering with the general public’s blessings!!! We have had conversations with and personal verification of several of these larger misleading institutions and it is down right shameful. Did you know that……

  • USDA allows grass fed on animals that are feed lot finished?
  • One of the larger pre-boxed meal companies in Georgia dropped pasture raised meats (including chicken) in their meals in favor of confined and industrially produced meats because they could be labeled “cage free”
  • Several of the larger farm to table eateries now get most, if not all, their beef from stockyard based suppliers but they still call it grass fed and farm to table because the cow did eat grass somewhere at some point in time before it was fattened up in a feed lot and sent to the restaurant via the local sale barn? Ditto for the chicken from the confined feeding houses to a table near you.
  • Most all of the chicken, beef and pork you may be buying at the big box grocer (and I mean ALL of them) is coming from industrial farms with fancy labels to make you believe that there is a pretty farm somewhere actually raising your food.
  • We had a collegiate institution ask us to provide poultry for their locally sourced farm to table menu with the caveat that they did not care what it was fed with or how it was raised just that it was local and cheap

We point out all of this not to throw stones but to simply show you the current business environment in which we are trying to prosper. We recognize that farm to table does not fit all budgets but the consumer should not be mislead or be gullible. A lot of people point out that farmer to consumer is too expensive, its not uniform enough, the packaging is not like the grocery store, its not convenient etc…etc..While we acknowledge that some (or all) of this may be true for certain farms and certain customers, it does not hold true across the board and the small entrepreneur, like us, if they are worth their salt, never stops trying to improve, be more competitive and retain/please customers. The truth of the matter is we have BIG hurdles we have to jump to keep that happening.

So for our “televangelist” type pleading we apologize if it has offended or alienated any of you…We mean it when we say “we love you and we need you” because we really really do. For us here at Heritage Farm our 2017 CSA, Farm share and winter time sales have been the slowest they’ve been in 8 years. We have freezers full of product here at the farm and more stored at USDA processors we can’t pick up because we have no where to store it. We are working full time both here at the farm and out in the construction industry to make ends meet and we love every minute of it…..We believe whole hardheartedly in what we do…make no mistake about it… but we surely, surely need you and your food dollars to keep our dream a reality..if that seems tel-evangelistic then pass the plate please!

Sincerely,
Greg, Lainya and the Hutchins Family

Help.....We need ya!....Please read (oh and don't forget your weekly orders by tonight for Wednesday farm truck)

Dear Friends,

Many of you will remember back in the fall when we did our early bird CSA and farm share sales that I was mentioning how important a part of our overall farm health these two programs were and how the winter season tended to be long, hard and draining on farm operational budgets etc….Well they are and it is!! We are about 1/3 of the way through the 2016/17 winter season and are really feeling the pinch of the seasonal slow down so we are asking for your help. For this sprin we are looking at close to $13,000.00 in startup costs for organic seeds, fertilizer, mulches, greenhouse supplies, irrigation supplies, transplants, livestock purchases and the like. Unfortunately our sales through the winter have been a little sluggish so far and we still have some CSA and farm share slots that are open for 2017. We normally see a HUGE interest in these areas as spring approaches and the market season opens but the time when we need the help is sooner rather than later.

So…..where do you come in? Glad you asked……If you(or someone you know) may be interested in the CSA or Farm share program for 2017 please consider joining or investing sooner rather than later. The link below will take you directly to the ordering window on the online store and below it is a link you can cut, paste and forward to your friends and neighbors. For those of you that have already joined us we THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts and look forward to an AWESOME 2017!
